Study in Australia

Everything you need to know about universities, admissions, and student life to plan your journey to Australia.

Education in Australia

Australia offers undergraduate degrees, specialist postgraduate qualifications and research programs across a wide range of disciplines. A strong application begins with choosing a suitable course, understanding its full cost and preparing both admission evidence and the separate requirements for the Student visa subclass 500.

Why study in Australia

Australian universities offer coursework and research pathways, with assessment that can include essays, case studies, laboratory assignments, presentations, design work and major projects. Many programs combine core subjects with electives, allowing students to build a particular academic specialisation.

Compare the learning resources available for your subject, including laboratories, research centres, libraries, academic skills support and accessibility services. International student advisers can explain enrolment, orientation and university procedures. The relevant department, course structure and teaching approach are more useful selection criteria than a country's general reputation alone.

Study levels and qualifications

Bachelor's degrees: Commonly three years full time. Some professional degrees take longer. An honours qualification may be a separate additional year or integrated into a longer bachelor's program.

Graduate certificates: Often approximately six months of full-time study, although structures vary. Check the entry requirements and whether credits can be used towards a further qualification.

Graduate diplomas: Often approximately one year. They offer more extensive specialist study than a graduate certificate but are not automatically equivalent to a master's degree.

Master's degrees by coursework: Commonly one to two years, depending on previous study, credit recognition and the program design. They generally involve taught units and may include a capstone, dissertation or research component.

Master's degrees by research: Focus on a supervised research project and thesis. Admission normally requires evidence of research preparation and an appropriate supervision arrangement.

Doctoral degrees: Usually involve several years of original research. The project, discipline, enrolment pattern and funding conditions determine the actual duration.

These qualifications sit within the Australian Qualifications Framework. Check the precise qualification title and level, especially when comparing a graduate diploma with a master's degree or a pathway course with direct degree entry.

Courses and masters options

Technology and engineering: Information technology, computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, software engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. Some conversion master's programs accept applicants from other disciplines, while advanced programs may require closely related previous study.

Business and management: MBA, business analytics, finance, accounting, marketing, international business, supply chain management and project management. MBA programs may expect professional experience, whereas some specialist business master's courses admit recent graduates.

Health and life sciences: Public health, health administration, biotechnology, biomedical sciences and selected clinical or allied health programs. Check additional prerequisites, placement requirements and whether the qualification is academic or intended for entry into a regulated profession.

Other disciplines: Education, environmental science, psychology, social work, architecture, design, communications and social sciences. Portfolios, interviews, relevant previous subjects or supervised practical components may apply.

For every course, compare the actual units, entry level, assessment, campus and duration. Ask whether recognised prior learning changes the course length and whether the revised duration is reflected in your offer and student documentation.

Universities and study locations

Examples include the University of Sydney and UNSW Sydney; the University of Melbourne and Monash University in Melbourne; the University of Queensland and Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane; the University of Western Australia and Curtin University in Perth; Adelaide University in Adelaide; and the Australian National University in Canberra.

Adelaide University began operating in January 2026, bringing together the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia. Applicants for new intakes should use the current institution and course information rather than rely on older lists describing the two former universities as separate new-entry options.

These examples are a starting point, not a ranking or a statement of eCampus Buddy partnership. Check the exact campus because course availability, fees and facilities can differ within the same university.

Recognition and course registration

Check the higher education provider's registration and the recognition of the award. For student visa study, confirm that the specific course and provider are registered on CRICOS, the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students. Record the course code, campus, duration and delivery details.

CRICOS registration and academic accreditation answer different questions. Where subject accreditation matters, confirm it separately. A similarly named course at another campus or an online version may not support the same student enrolment arrangements.

Read the university's official handbook. Identify prerequisites, compulsory units, progression rules and any additional charges associated with laboratories, equipment, fieldwork or compulsory practical components.

Intakes and application planning

The principal intakes are commonly February or March and July. Some institutions use trimesters and offer additional starts, including later in the year. Not every course is offered in every intake, and research admission may follow a different schedule.

Start planning approximately nine to twelve months ahead where possible. Check scholarship dates before finalising your application timetable. Allow time for English testing, academic documents, offer conditions, deposit payment, health cover, the Confirmation of Enrolment and the visa application.

If you apply near the closing date, ask whether there is enough time to complete the international admission and visa stages. An open application portal does not establish that late arrival will be permitted.

Academic admission requirements

Undergraduate applicants need an accepted secondary qualification and the required grades and subjects. A foundation or diploma pathway may be available if direct entry requirements are not met. Confirm the progression grades, credit arrangements and total duration before choosing a pathway.

Master's applicants usually need a recognised bachelor's degree. Entry can depend on the discipline, grades, relevant subjects and professional experience. Three-year bachelor's degrees may be accepted for many courses, but eligibility and credit are determined by the university and program.

For an MBA, check experience requirements, references, interviews and any required GMAT or other assessment. For research degrees, examine the expected honours or master's preparation, research proposal requirements and supervisor availability. A general expression of supervisor interest is not the same as an admission or scholarship offer.

Portfolio-based and professional programs can require additional evidence. Submit exactly what the faculty requests rather than using a generic application checklist alone.

English language requirements for admission and the visa

Universities commonly accept IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic, with other options depending on the institution. Required overall results and component scores vary by course. Education, health and other professional programs can have higher requirements than general university entry.

The student visa has its own rules about accepted tests, test dates, score thresholds and exemptions. The approved test framework changed in August 2025, so older comparison charts may be inaccurate. A test accepted for university admission is not automatically acceptable for the visa.

For applicants who must provide test evidence, the standard visa IELTS threshold is generally 6.0. Specified eligible pathways can use lower thresholds, including 5.5 with qualifying arrangements such as at least 10 weeks of ELICOS, and 5.0 with at least 20 weeks of ELICOS, subject to the exact rules. ELICOS means English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students. These are visa examples, not a promise that a university will admit you with those scores.

Check the current rule for your test type and test date. Do not apply an old IELTS-to-PTE or IELTS-to-TOEFL conversion to a newer test framework. Obtain any university language waiver in writing and separately establish whether a visa exemption applies.

Application documents and offer acceptance

Prepare your passport, transcripts, completion certificates, English results and any required grading explanation. Depending on the course, provide a CV, statement, references, portfolio, research proposal or evidence of relevant experience. Translations and certified copies must follow the institution's instructions.

After receiving an offer, identify all conditions and the amount payable to accept it. Review the complete fee schedule, refund policy, scholarship conditions and any credit granted. Confirm the course start, orientation and latest arrival dates.

Once the required acceptance conditions are completed, the provider issues a Confirmation of Enrolment, usually called a CoE. Check that the course, dates and personal details are correct. An offer letter and a CoE serve different purposes; a CoE is normally required for a student visa application.

Tuition fees and study costs

Tuition depends on the university, discipline, qualification and intake year. Use the actual course fee rather than a single national estimate. As an illustration, Deakin University's Master of Information Technology lists an estimated AUD 44,200 for one year of full-time international study in 2026. This is one course example, not a national average or the cost of every IT master's degree.

For an undergraduate example, the University of Queensland lists an indicative international annual tuition fee of AUD 60,952 for its Bachelor of Information Technology in 2027, based on the stated normal study load. It is an annual figure for a normally three-year degree. The Deakin and UQ examples refer to different qualifications and intake years and should not be treated as a national fee range.

Calculate the complete qualification using the actual study duration, required units and expected annual fee changes. A published first-year fee is not necessarily the full program fee. Credit recognition can change the number of units you need, but confirm the revised cost in writing.

Include application or assessment charges where applicable, English tests, books, equipment, mandatory course charges, Overseas Student Health Cover, the student visa fee and travel. Separately calculate the maintenance funds required for the visa. Avoid counting a tuition deposit as a new extra expense if it is already credited towards the total tuition amount.

Ask which payments are required before the CoE is issued and which later instalments apply. Read the refund conditions for withdrawal, deferral and an unsuccessful visa application before paying.

Scholarships and research funding

Universities offer merit awards, international tuition scholarships, faculty awards and research scholarships. Some are automatically assessed with admission; others require a separate application, statement, research proposal or nomination.

The Research Training Program, or RTP, supports eligible research master's and doctoral study through participating universities. Funding can involve tuition support, a stipend or allowances, depending on the award. Apply through the university's research scholarship process and confirm the funded period and continuation conditions.

Australia Awards Scholarships are available under country-specific arrangements for eligible participating countries and applicants. They are not open to every nationality or every course. Check the current country eligibility instead of assuming that all international students can apply.

A partial tuition scholarship does not automatically cover insurance, visa fees or the full maintenance requirement. Obtain a formal award letter showing the amount, duration and any conditions before using the award in your financial plan.

Education loans and financial planning

Compare lenders by interest, fees, collateral or co-signer requirements, repayment arrangements and the timing of disbursement. Confirm that the loan can cover the selected institution and course and that funds will be available before deposits and later instalments are due.

Keep the formal approval letter and evidence of any conditions that must be satisfied before funds are released. If family savings or sponsorship are part of the plan, prepare records showing ownership, source and genuine availability. A realistic plan should cover the whole course, including any expected annual fee increases.

Student visa subclass 500

The Student visa subclass 500 is the main visa for eligible international students enrolled in registered courses. The application generally requires a valid CoE, identity evidence, the relevant English evidence, appropriate financial evidence, health cover and satisfaction of health, character and Genuine Student requirements.

Apply through ImmiAccount and use the personalised document checklist. Requirements can depend on nationality, provider and individual circumstances. A university offer, scholarship or previous travel history does not guarantee approval.

The base student visa application charge starts from AUD 2,500 from 1 July 2026. Other applicable charges, examinations, insurance and payment costs may be additional. Confirm the charge shown for your actual application before payment.

Financial evidence and health insurance

Where financial capacity evidence is required, the standard maintenance amount for one student is AUD 29,710 for 12 months, alongside the required tuition and travel costs. This is not an all-inclusive study budget. For a shorter course, follow the applicable calculation in the current checklist.

Evidence may include eligible savings, a loan, financial support or a scholarship, depending on the accepted evidence rules. Show that the money is genuinely accessible. Do not assume that a bank balance with no explanation will be sufficient in every case.

Most student visa applicants must hold Overseas Student Health Cover, or OSHC, for the required period of their stay unless a recognised exemption applies. Arrange the cover dates using the university's and insurer's instructions, including the period before classes begin and after they finish where required. Ordinary travel insurance is not automatically a substitute for OSHC.

The Genuine Student requirement

The Genuine Student assessment considers your circumstances and whether study is the primary reason for the application. The online form asks focused questions about your current circumstances, your course and provider choice, how the course benefits you and other relevant information. Responses are generally limited to 150 words per question and must be in English.

Use specific, truthful explanations supported by your records. Explain how your previous education relates to the course, why you selected its curriculum and how you will fund the studies. Describe study gaps or changes of direction clearly. A copied statement or unsupported claim is less useful than a concise explanation that matches your documents.

Student visa application and arrival steps

  • Choose the registered course and complete admission requirements.
  • Accept the offer, make the required payment and obtain the CoE.
  • Arrange OSHC for the required dates and prepare identity, academic, English and funding evidence.
  • Complete the visa application, including the Genuine Student responses, and pay the applicable charge.
  • Complete requested biometrics, health examinations or additional document requests.
  • After a decision, check the grant notice for the visa dates and conditions before travelling.
  • Complete university check-in, orientation and enrolment, and keep the university informed if the start date changes.

For applicants from India, prepare semester-wise marksheets, the degree or accepted provisional certificate and any requested syllabus or grading details. Confirm credit recognition and three-year degree acceptance for the exact course. Do not rely on another applicant's admission outcome as proof of your eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Australia

Answers to what students most often ask before applying to study in Australia.

Compare the course units, faculty, facilities, campus, assessment, accreditation and complete cost. A familiar university name is only one part of the decision.

Coursework programs centre on taught units and assessments, sometimes with a substantial project. Research programs centre on a supervised investigation and thesis and require appropriate research preparation.

Many courses consider three-year degrees, but acceptance depends on the qualification and program. Ask about both admission and the amount of credit, since these are separate decisions.

Some conversion courses accept applicants from unrelated disciplines. Advanced courses may require specific prior study. Check prerequisites and whether a longer entry route is required.

They are not universal requirements. Selected programs, particularly some business courses, may require or accept them as part of their assessment.

You may be able to use another accepted test or a university waiver. Separately check the student visa's accepted evidence and exemption rules.

Not automatically. University admission and visa assessment use different criteria. Establish whether your circumstances meet a visa exemption or require another accepted test result.

It is the official register of providers and courses available to overseas students studying under the relevant student visa arrangements. Check your exact course and campus, not only the university name.

Normally you need the CoE issued after completing the provider's acceptance requirements. Check your application checklist for any specific exception.

There is no universal full-degree prepayment rule. The provider sets the required deposit or initial payment and explains the remaining instalments.

The standard 12-month amount for one student is AUD 29,710, in addition to the required tuition and travel costs. It is a visa calculation, not the complete tuition-inclusive cost of study.

An eligible, properly documented loan can form part of the evidence. Show the approved amount, conditions and availability, and follow the current financial-capacity checklist.

It is required for most student visa holders unless a recognised exemption applies. Confirm the required dates and use appropriate cover rather than assuming ordinary travel insurance is sufficient.

Explain your circumstances, course choice, preparation, funding and the value of the study in your own situation. Keep the responses specific and consistent with the supporting records.

No single gap length guarantees either acceptance or refusal. Explain the period honestly and show why the proposed course is appropriate and achievable.

No. The base charge starts from AUD 2,500 for applications from July 2026. Check the current application charge and any additional costs before paying.

No. Eligibility depends on the participating country program and other conditions. University scholarships and research funding may provide different options.

Some awards are substantial, but many cover only part of tuition or a specified period. Read the award letter for duration, renewal rules and excluded expenses.

Contact the university before its latest arrival date. If a deferral is needed, obtain the revised CoE and appropriate instructions before travelling.

Check your personal details, grant dates, entry arrangements, CoE and OSHC dates. Then complete the university's enrolment and orientation requirements.
